If a few Christians gather regularly to pray and study God’s word and perhaps sing hymns or choruses together, are they a church? What are the essential components of a church? How can we know that this group is “a church,” and another group of people who lack certain characteristics are “not a church?”

DISCOVERY HOUR CLASS ON THE COVENANT AFFIRMATIONS
Join us for an innovative, thought-provoking, conversational experience as we learn more about the historic and theological foundations of our church body. This series engages 'head', 'heart' and 'hands.'
This class will be led by Pastor Dan Teefey and continues this Sunday at 9 a.m. downstairs in the large room on the right, at the end of the hall. (The old Junior/Senior High classroom--they now meet in the White House.)
Westminster Confession
Tuesday, September 1st, 2009Lesson from August 30th, 2009
The English Parliament called for the Westminster Assembly in 1643 for the purpose restricting the church in response to the Puritan movement. Puritanism was initially the distinctly English version of the Protestant Reformation which began in the 16th Century. The name itself, Puritan, refers to the purifying work this movement sought in the Church of England, but also in the individual soul and in society at large. Many in movement became frustrated with the Church of England and some of these emigrated to the United States helping to found the colonies.

The word catechism comes from the Greek verb katecheo which means to instruct. In their Christian form they date back to the early church and typically involve the use of question and answer. The usual pattern was for a convert to the faith to learn the catechism prior to their baptism. We find versions of catechisms throughout church history, with a particularly high number having been produced during the Reformation period of the 16th century.
