Once a month we plan to stretch the students in their idea of how to worship, pray, and celebrate communion-this Sunday was our first attempt. It went pretty well! We started over at the White house eating snacks, of course, and then once they had chatted enough we hopped over to what I like to call "The Big House" and set up shop in the sanctuary. We lit candles and sang some worship songs-they stood on chairs and screamed them really. That was totally fine with me-they were making a joyful noise! Then we celebrated communion together with warm bread and grape Koolaid-the smell of the bread wafting through the sanctuary was delightful!!! Then we took them through a "chill out" exercise so that they could really focus on hearing God’s Word-just breathing deep and allowing God to take their worries and concerns. Then we read from John where Jesus washed the disciple’s feet-afterwards we washed their feet, and while we did, we had the other students tell that person all the great things they love about them-really trying to show each student how much they are cared for at Riverside. We ended with one more song, and called it a night. At SH we repeated this but at the end of the evening we had a little Christian karaoke session with some of the worship music-what a hoot and a blessing!
