In his debut release Crave, Chris Tomlinson said, "When it comes to doing something for God, people would rather eat chips." Strange idea maybe, but that’s what came to mind when I first skimmed through these passages. Mostly, I noticed the wisdom of verse 14.
Passover. You know? That was to be the time for all who believe in God to mark the door frames of their homes with lamb’s blood to signify that they indeed believe. It assured them of God’s protection.
After reading that passage I thought of this lovely accessory we display in our home. Sitting so stately above the centerpiece of our living room, we have a wooden plaque that reads: "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."
Now, as I munch on a hand full of chips, I ponder that piece of decor and wonder why it is we feel the need to let words describe us as believers? Shouldn’t we instead be showing Christ to others simply through the ways that we live out our lives? Given the people that we come into contact with daily, shouldn’t our ultimate purpose be to get them wondering, "What is it that they have in their lives to be so happy about?"
An authentic faith should be that obvious. People shouldn’t have to step into our homes and see our decorations in order to figure out that we choose Christ as our Lord and Savior. It makes me want to do something for God—to do life more intentionally and throw out that bag of chips!
