As a group we got to experience something some people would die for-funny though, as we were walking very briskly towards Elliott Hall in the bitter cold Sunday night, one of our girls asked, "Who is Michael W. Smith?" Followed by, "I’ve never even heard of Steven Curtis Chapman." Well, 3 hours later the students were well acquainted with 2 of Christian music’s legends, and were mostly left with the feeling of having encountered the Holy Spirit through some rockin’ worship!! Of course the boys were starving and I had to explain that there wasn’t a concession stand in Elliott (they did find a vending machine though) and during the set where they played their music from the late 80’s I received several eye rolls from their direction-but all in all they were really touched by the music!! We also got a chance to hear about Steven’s personal tragedy when he lost his daughter, but got to hear how even when he doesn’t get what God’s doing-God is God and he (Steven) is not. It spoke a lot of truth to us. We also heard about his foundation for helping adoptive parents-Sho Hope. We brought quite a cross-section of people from Riverside(parents, students, singles) but we all felt that it was amazing what God is doing through both of the men-and now our students have had a taste of what it means to be impactful for God-whether you’re a super-star or a kid walking the hallways at school-we can do it all for His glory!!
