Labor Day weekend is one of those long weekends you just want to last forever! It’s like the last reminder that school is really back in session and it’s time to buckle down. Summer is really over, and we wanted to celebrate in style!!! We took 10 students up to Michigan to explore the lower Kalamazoo River via kayak. Now, we’ve never been kayaking so we don’t have anything to compare it to, but it was a BLAST!! We stopped at Redamak’s burgers where everyone and their mother had stopped to “bite into a legend” as they say, ate DELICIOUS food, and made it up to Saugatuck by late afternoon. When we got to the rental place we were pleasantly surprised that the owner was/is a Young Life leader and super fun!! His whole crew consisted of Young Life kids too. While they drove us to the drop-off they gave us 2 rules (I was expecting a whole list like everywhere else you take teenagers has). One, don’t pee in the kayaks-duh-and two, we couldn’t get off the bus until we sang them a song. Of course we picked “Little White Box” and shouted it at the top of our lungs!! They LOVED it and plan on using it at their next club!! Once we were in the water the sun disappeared, but no worries, we made it 2 hours on the water, amongst beautiful boats and gorgeous views. Mark and Austin made it their personal priority to get everyone as wet as possible and see how fast they could make it down and back the river. Kaitlyn and I took the scenic route and skipped the race portion of the trip:) We were starving when we got off the water so we found the nearest Steak n Shake, ate a ton of food for the second time, and made the rest of the trip home jamming to some seriously ridiculously loud tunes!!!!!! What an awesome way to send the summer out in style-great food, even better fellowship, lots-o-fun!!!
