On October 13 from 6:00-8:00pm, Riverside will host a free evening for family, friends and anyone else who has ever wondered, "How can I help my loved one who is in an abusive relationship?" Presenters will include Norah Ashcraft, legal advocate with the YWCA, and Katie Taylor Schmidt, creator and facilitator of the SOBA (Sick of Being Alone) women’s support group. They will define abuse and teach steps you can take to help domestic abuse victims and survivors of all ages. Both adult and teen/college abuse will be discussed.
During the session you will learn:
- How to see the signs of possible abuse
- How to approach the victim and what the victim needs to hear from you
- How to help someone with safety planning
- What mistakes parents can make that actually increase isolation and play into an abuser’s hands
