So maybe you are new to Riverside and you have never heard of Operation Christmas Child. Or maybe you have slept a few hours since last year and you just can’t remember. Here are a few tips to help you pack your box.
- First, the boxes will be collected on Sunday November 21.
- Do they really have to be in by then? YES. We have to take the boxes to an area collection site so they can then be sent to a larger sorting facility. If you don’t get your boxes in, they will miss the boat. Literally.
- Does it have to be a shoe box?
- No, but it does need to be the same size as a shoe box. They actually suggest using a plastic bin, the size of a shoe box. This allows the child use the box to store food or carry water. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
- What in the world do I pack in my shoe box?
- Toys, of course! But there are a few restrictions (army men, for example). You can find a more specific list here. Also keep in mind that there are categories for gender and age! Or you can watch this handy video here!
- Do I have to pay for shipping?
- Usually, yes. But a generous Riverside attender has graciously offered to pay the cost of every box! So that means you can use the money you would have spent on shipping ($7 per box) to fill another box, perhaps!
- How many boxes should I fill?
- As many as you can!! Last year Riverside sent around 130, this year our goal is 200! So start shopping!
