Luke 15:1-31 :1Now the tax collectors and “sinners” were all gathering around to hear him. 2But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
Thankfully, we learn from this passage that Jesus was just as willing to rub elbows with the questionable crowd as he was to wrestle tough questions with the religious elite. He saw them all for who they truly were—lost and in need of a savior. Our assignment, should we choose to accept it, is to model his behavior. If your life is like mine, he gives us ample opportunity to do so.Like this weekend, for instance. I am humbled to have the honor of working alongside thirty-five maturing Christian women ages 18 and up from various denominations in the community whose sole purpose for the next three days is to share the love of Christ with twenty-five, yet-to-be-introduced-to-us teenage girls. It’s life changing, practical evangelism—genuine, awesome, exhausting and scary all at the same time. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit is in charge.
Rest assured that we’ve been preparing for this “Awakening” weekend for the past eight weeks of meetings through prayer, worship, training and fellowship. After all, we’ll be eating and rubbing elbows with sinners, like us—young ladies who crave transparency, acceptance and love. Hopefully, by sharing Christ’s love and opening up our lives to one another, his light will pour forth and the lost will be found. It’ll be a wakeup call for us all.
“Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Eph. 5:14
