July’s Brown Bag Event decorated 50 brown bags for the Back to School Giveaway. The bags were prayed over and some of them filled with back to school supplies. There were 7 people decorating bags. The scripture verse was Proverbs 22:6.
A special thank you to Kirsten Roe, Carol Zschiedrich, Michelle McBrite, Rachel Bandy, and Joshua Fleener for helping with the Back To School Giveaway.
The Back to School Giveaway served 5 families. Twenty adults and children received Back To School supplies and/or clothing. They came from 4 different sources. One family came because of a flyer being posted at Salvation Army. Two families came from the Riverside Covenant Church Website! And 1 family was given a flyer from Richfield Apartments. One child was referred to us by Lafayette Transitional Housing. The word did go out. These 5 families had never been to Riverside before Saturday.
The remaining items were distributed as follows….
- Forty bags went to Goodwill for the Collect and Connect Program. This means $200 in Vouchers. One thought is to give them to the Christmas Jubilee Families.
- Eleven banana boxes of jeans went to Salvation Army’s Tools for Schools program being distributed August 8th at LARA. Salvation Army also received backpacks and large items that would not fit into Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes.
- Megan Mills received a copier paper box of supplies to use downstairs or in Operation Christmas shoe boxes as she sees fit.
Even though only 20 people were served, I consider the event very successful. Lots of other groups benefited from the event also.
