Partnering With WLIS

Towards the end of the school year last year, we were blessed to have Principal Psarros come to speak at our church about needs at West Lafayette Intermediate School (WLIS). There were many things that she brought forth, and as the school year winded down, we began to look toward this year to make a more formal connection. Listed below are tangible ways that we can help. This could be a great opportunity for your pod to serve, people at your work if you are looking for community outreach, or your family.

What you will see first is a brief summary of the needs and amount of people needed. Second you will see the details of what is happening. And at the end a link to a sign up.

THE SUMMARY:

WHERE?: West Lafayette High School.
HOW MANY?: About 3 people who can move food cans and items off a pallet and shelf them.

THE DETAILS:
Food Finders Pallet Unload
Food Finders (in partnership with WLIS) delivers food to the high school where it is then packed up and delivered to families. Help is needed at the high school to unload the food from pallets and shelve it on delivery days. The food is placed on pallets in the hallway next to the shelving area. They need people who can take it off the pallet and organize it onto the shelves in preparation for packing. (This service opportunity is at the High School, but still benefits the families at WLIS)

Food Finders Food Delivery
Once the food is on the shelf, there is a class at West Side that packages the food for delivery. Then it needs to be delivered to families. This service opportunity involves individuals who could come on Thursdays or early Friday morning and pick up the food from the high school and deliver it to set addresses in West Lafayette. This is a confidential service, so you leave the bag on the porch, ring the doorbell, and leave. (This service opportunity is at the High School, but still benefits the families at WLIS)

After School Snacks and Tutoring
WLIS has been wondering for a long time about providing a safe space for kids to go and receive tutoring and a snack once a week. They are looking at Thursday’s after school for about 15-20 kids to come across to our church, sit downstairs and work on homework for an hour before going home. These kids will be vetted by the school and must meet discipline and attendance requirements in order to come. We are looking for 4-5 who could commit to being a part of tutoring 4th-6th graders on Thursday’s during the school year. In addition, anyone who could donate snacks for the kids to eat when they come over. Training will be provided. At this point, this is a big dream for the school. We know it is a big commitment on our end as well. At this time, we are seeking to evaluate interest within the church in hosting this.

Please feel free to reach out to Pastor Ara if you have any questions (ara@rcovenant.org).
