Israel’s Disobedience – Judges 2:6-3:6

Scripture text for Monday, February 8, 2010: Judges 2:6-3:6

Full Text Online | Listen Online

Chapter 2 values wisdom, authority and accountability for the Israelites. “10After the whole generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel . . . 16Then the Lord raised up judges, who saved them out of the hands of their raiders.”

In reading the E100 Bible Study thus far, I have been constantly reminded of the Veggie Tales versions of the Old Testament stories because my oldest son watched them incessantly as a toddler. While Joe (Joseph) and Moe (Moses) had full length feature films, Josh and The Big Wall is a shorter episode of talking vegetables. This might lead one to think that the story does not have much practical application to everyday life, but I feel that God has given us this story for a reminder on using our voice.

Crossing the Jordan – Joshua 3:1-4:24

Biblical miracles are more tangible when I imagine myself inside the story. So to grasp the magnitude of this one, I picture myself being among a mass of families as numerous as the stars in the sky, all standing on the banks of a swift and swollen river. Except for Caleb and Joshua, we children of Hebrew slaves were all born free in the vast and dreadful desert, having cut our teeth on manna and still wearing sandals that will not wear out. We’ve seen the Lord in pillars of clouds and fire, and marveled at Moses’ radiant face. We know far more about being thirsty for water than having too much of it, and nearly nothing about conquering the inhabited cities of Canaan.

Joshua Succeeds Moses – Joshua 1:1-1:18

Scripture text for Wednesday, February 3, 2010: Joshua 1:1-1:18

Full Text Online | Listen Online

Moses, the servant of God, has died. God commands Joshua to get the people ready to cross the Jordan and to occupy the Promised Land. Three times the Lord exhorts Joshua to “be strong and have courage” as he carries out the work of God. The Israelites echo this exhortation, “be strong and have courage”, as they pledge their obedience to Joshua.

God promises Joshua that he will “never be forsaken” and that he will be “prosperous and successful” if he is “careful to obey all the law” and to “meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.”

The Golden Calf – Exodus 32:1-34:35

Scripture text for Tuesday, February 2, 2010: Exodus 32:1-34:35

Full Text Online | Listen Online

In this passage, we find Moses had been on the mountain a long time—so long, in fact, the people down below started complaining. They were disgruntled, and applying pressure to Aaron to build them gods who would go before them.

Aaron quickly gave in to their demands by instructing them to give him all their gold so he could cast it into a calf. He not only built a false god, he built an alter in front of the golden calf, AND he declared a festival the next day!
