Footwashing and Communion
Once a month we plan to stretch the students in their idea of how to worship, pray, and celebrate communion-this Sunday was our first attempt. It went pretty well! We started over at the White house eating snacks, of course, and then once they had chatted enough we hopped over to what I like to call "The Big House" and set up shop in the sanctuary. We lit candles and sang some worship songs-they stood on chairs and screamed them really. That was totally fine with me-they were making a joyful noise! Then we celebrated communion together with warm bread and grape Koolaid-the smell of the bread wafting through the sanctuary was delightful!!! Then we took them through a "chill out" exercise so that they could really focus on hearing God’s Word-just breathing deep and allowing God to take their worries and concerns. Then we read from John where Jesus washed the disciple’s feet-afterwards we washed their feet, and while we did, we had the other students tel

Laurel and I have a friend who just recently was released from prison. He spent most of his adult life behind bars but a few years ago committed his life to Christ between jail sentences. The many opportunities that we had of visiting our friend in two different jails and a prison demonstrated quite dramatically how depressing, desperate and frustrating that situation can be. Watching our friend promoted from prisoner to freedom has helped us understand the lessons from today’s passage about Joseph.

Sold into slavery by his brothers? Unjust! Evil! How could brothers commit such heinous sin against one they should love dearly? These are often the reactions to the reading of this old, familiar Biblical drama.
This scenario and others like it – murder, rape, infidelity – continue to repeat themselves today. Horrific events outside man’s ability to control – earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes – take their toll around the globe. We witness these things and can be shaken. Emotionally our minds can be shaken, physically our bodies can be shaken, and spiritually our faith can be shaken.
How are we to understand where God is in these events?

Jacob and Esau Reconcile – Genesis 32:1-33:20
Scripture text for Friday, January 15, 2010: Genesis 32:1-33:20

Esau prepared for his reunion with his brother, Jacob, by bringing “a few” men with him. While preparing for this meeting with his brother – the brother who tricked him out of birthright and blessing – it seems Esau may have been preparing for retribution rather than reconciliation. Yet, when the brothers meet, Esau runs to his brother and embraces him. (like the father of the prodigal son??) God is good and answered Jacob’s prayer for help from chapter 32.
