The Riverside Youth invite you to join us as we stay in town this summer to do mission oriented work in the West Lafayette-Lafayette community. We plan on eating, worshiping, working and living life together from July 25-29 and would LOVE for you to join us in anyway you can that week. If you could bring a meal, write a devotion, lead music, or actually come to our site and work with us WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!!! Tell us what you’re good at (or even what you’re not good at but you like to do anyway) and we’ll find a place for you. Our goal is for you to get to know the youth and their hearts, for them to get to know you, and for us to serve this wonderful place we live in for Jesus! Please let Becky Wellner know if you would like more information about our week. She can be reached at [email protected] or 463.4600.

“This is an apocalyptic passage, through and through. Interestingly, there is wide appeal for this genre, especially when you consider apocalyptic films. Recent examples would include the Terminator series, I am Legend, and V is for Vendetta. I would speculate on at least the following two reasons for this. First, we like to know where we are going and so, we enjoy a film that seeks to capture that even if we know the odds of it happening as it does in any one film are very low. We like to at least think and imagine various ways the world might go. Second, we recognize that the world, the universe, is in fact much, much bigger than any one of us. These films confirm this recognition by portraying large numbers of people and their lives being completely overwhelmed by the events.
Homemade Communion
So we had planned to have ‘gross-out’ this last Sunday, but as I was preparing for a back-up plan with our yucky weather, I really felt like rain or shine, this Sunday we needed to gather to speak directly about spiritual gifts and have communion together. I’m not sure what it was, but the change in plans was worth it. We actually made our bread and juice for our little service which was new for most of them-the Mann twins rocked out the bread and everyone got a turn to knead the dough and smash grapes. As the bread was baking we read through a list of spiritual gifts and went around and told others what we thought they were gifted with-kind of like an encouragement circle. We let them wrestle with areas where they would like to be stronger and the effort it might take to get there spiritually. We ended with warm bread dipped in our grapejuice, prayed it out, and went our separate ways-it was a great start to the week!!!

“He’s got his foot over on my side!” “Mom, he’s been in my room again!” “Dad, he just took my mitt.” Anyone with a sibling knows you would not always describe the relationship using the word “love”. Of course sibling squabbles are a far cry from the evil that came into Cain’s relationship with his brother Abel. Christ calls us to love not only our siblings but all of our brothers and sisters in humanity regardless of our differences, our frustration, anger, or impatience. Can you imagine the frustration Christ must have continually felt with His disciples? Their humanness, their imperfections, their sinful nature, their lack of faith; and yet, He loves. He loves us so much that he made the ultimate sacrifice of dying for our sins that we may have eternal life in Him. And what does he ask of us? Is it so much to love Him and to also love one another? We will stumble and we will fall but His love and His grace never waver. Our obedience is evidence that the Holy Spirit resides in us.
“Loving God means keeping his commandments and his commandments are not burdensome. For every child of God defeats this evil world and we achieve this victory through our faith.” 1 John 5:3-4 (New Living Translation)
